HUMANS can no more be masters of their destiny than any other animal, writes evolutionist John Gray. Author Shmuley Boteach expresses quite the opposite view in his book An Smart Person's Guide to Judaism. He claims : Man is not an animal, and is therefore his very own destiny.

King or commoner, ancient or modern-man has felt the requirement for trustworthy prophecies per the future. As clever creatures, we humans study the past, are aware of the present, and are particularly interested in the future. A Chinese proverb aptly announces : He who could foretell affairs three days in advance would be rich for thousands of years.

Others throughout history have felt helpless because they thought that supernatural forces controlled their destiny. The ancient Greeks, says Boteach, were obsessive about the idea that all hope was futile since man could not overcome destined destiny. They felt that the destiny of each person was decided by capricious goddesses. These goddesses, they believed, decided when an individual would die as well as how much distress and pain he would have to endure throughout his life.

Throughout the ages, millions have tried to peer into the future by consulting what they perceived as being divine. Take the ancient Greeks as an example. They'd scores of sacred oracles, such as those of Delphi, Delos, and Dodona, where they would go to inquire of their gods with regard to political or army developments as well as such private affairs as travel, marriage, and children. Not just kings and army leaders but complete tribes and city-states sought guidance from the spirit realm through these oracles.

Liberty and Tyranny Book

Yesterday I went to book stall and picked up Mark Levin's new book "Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto." A short summary Liberty and Tyranny, it is a 205 pages long book, and I had it completed in five hours.

The Liberty and Tyranny theme is straightforward and logical. Chapter one, "On Liberty and Tyranny," lays out the basic conceptual scheme. Mark Levin contrasts 2 opposing political philosophies currently in contention: The Conservative versus the Statist.

He observed that the the statist is discontented with the condition of his own existence. The writer condemns his fellow man, environment, and society itself for denying him the accomplishment, success, and acclamation he believes he deserves.

On the one hand, the Liberty and Tyranny is an exhaustive yet compact lecture on the major political issues of this time. On the other hand, the writer brings to bear the rules of the Yankee Founders and Framers of the Constitution (and the great thinkers who guided them ), illustrating, dissecting, and explaining our present political arguments, while enlightening the reader with the real knowledge left to all of us.

Writer quite properly rejects the label "liberal", because in current usage the term has become wholly divorced from its literal meaning. He writes:
The Modern Liberal believes in the supremacy of the state. For the Modern Liberal, the individual's imperfection and private pursuits impede the objectives of a utopian state. In this, Modern Liberalism promotes what French Historian Alexis de Tocqueville called soft tyranny, which becomes increasingly more oppressive, partly leading to hard tyranny.... As the word "liberal" is, in its classical meaning, the opposite of authoritarian, it is more correct,, to characterize the Modern Liberal as a Statist. (page 4)

Each chapter in Liberty and Tyranny is a well-constructed article, so the reader is reasonably free to read it a little at a time. But, unlike so many contemporary political works, it's also a well-constructed and continuity though out the book This could entice you to remain up all night reading it as soon as a copy comes into your hands.

Overall Mark Levin's "Liberty and Tyranny" is a price worth to buy and read for those who interest in political philosophy
